5 Strings

OK ~ this is a Tenor Banjo site, but I'm just curious to know how many folks here, also dabble with a 5 Stringer.

Not perhaps, in many people's eyes, the ideal instrument for Irish Music, but some players have made a pretty good fist of some Irish Music.

Some Carolan tunes sound quite nice on a 5 string & a number of well known Tenor players have tried to emulate the sound of a 5 String on their Tenor Banjo, so let's face it, they do have something going for them.

{ For safety reasons, perhaps I should have made this group - Private! } ;-)

Here's my own vintage S.S.Stewart.

It has gut strings, so is certainly not loud enough for our Trad Sessions, but it's still a thing of beauty.

I'm a mediocre Scruggs style 5 string player who has spent some time working out a bunch of Irish tunes using a combination of single string and melodic styles. I don't usually think about trying to imitate a tenor; I have two of those if I want to play tenor. I try to copy fiddlers and pipers fluters and whistlers and of course singers I think the 5 string can have its own distinctive voice in Irish music, playing in an irish style.

I play on a Goldtone ot800 ln.
And a Vegastyle 5string with an internal resonator made by Hugo Valcke in Belgium. I play clawhammer...ish

I started with clawhammer and had been playing for a few years before I got a tenor. I still love clawhammer but these days just play old-time.  I did a wider range of music on five-string when I played on nylon strings.  It's a lovely sound.  I'm playing a Bart Reiter Special right now.  I've always wanted an SS Stewart--I love the inlays.
