I thought I'd try & start collecting some info on tuning a Banjo CGDA for Irish Music.

Gerry O'Connor has this to say about strings on his website:


I use D'Addario nickel ballend strings for live work.

10.5 for A or first string
13 for D or second string
22 for G or third string
28 or 30 for C or fourth string
I sometimes bring the C up to a D on the fourth string so I mostly use 28.
For the studio I use bronze wound on the 3rd and 4th strings as they have a better tone but they're expensive to be using them all the time.

For CGDA tuning I prefer this stings:
"GHS 220 Tenor Banjo Stainless Steel light"
.010 1/2 .012 .020 .028
and exchange .010 1/2 with an 0.009 1/2
