Absolutely right Ron.
Charlie's playing influenced me, more than any other single Banjo player.
I was lucky enough to see De Danann playing live a few times over the years, just at the time when I was really getting in to Banjo playing.
One of my fondest memories is being at a huge end of festival session in London, back in the late 70s I think it was. Anyway, playing in that one large hotel room were none other than Barney McKenna who introduced me to the Tenor Banjo, Charlie Piggott whose playing influence my music more than any other & John Carty who is now my favourite Banjo player.
At that session I'm sure John was still just a teenager, but he played a wonderful solo, proving that even then, in such illustrious company, he was a force to be reckoned with.
Anyway I digress, but the fact is, without Charlie's influence, I might not have persisted with the Tenor Banjo. He was truly a great Banjo player.

Although I've played fiddle and mandolin for many years, Charlie's banjo playing with De Danann always affected me - it was driven, growly and exciting. So more than any other banjo player, Charlie was influential in me finally getting a tenor banjo, albeit late. Now it's my most cherished instrument - I love playing it.
Very unfortunate that Charlie's thumb accident prevented him from continuing to make great banjo music.
I was luckier...within two months of finally getting my banjo, I lopped off part of my left thumb in a careless mitre saw accident. Fortunately it hasn't prevented me from playing! I kid around that I'm faster now - more aerodynamic!!
